I started in 2014 as a Management Trainee in Belfast. Within my first eight months, the opportunity arose to take part in a summer secondment at London Heathrow for three months. This gave me the chance to enhance my sales and customer service skills in a busy, large, international environment I had never worked in before. I had a fantastic time – I grew not only personally but also professionally.
I was promoted to Assistant Manager of Lisburn not long after my return to Belfast. My time in London helped me in the interview process as it was something that stood out on my CV – no one else applying for the position could say they had worked in the biggest branch in Europe at that time!
A few Assistant Manager roles later, I was then promoted to Branch Manager of Belfast Boucher Road. This was the chance to manage a branch that had huge opportunities across all four core areas of the business.
I didn’t reinvent the wheel! I focused on executing the basics to a high standard, and we started to see success. I looked after my customers and my employees, and the rest all fell into place – which is the foundation on which Jack Taylor built the company on.
This simple philosophy is something that really resonated with me when I started the company and something I knew I wanted to live by as a leader. We finished the fiscal year in the company’s top 10 moving the branch up over 160 places.
"I have always surrounded myself with positive likeminded people"
Who is your best friend at work? What impact did they have on your career?
I have always surrounded myself with positive likeminded people throughout my career. I feel very lucky to have made great friends and found people that I can trust and lean on when needed.
A best friend at work isn’t necessarily someone you spend your weekends with. They are someone who is there to help, listen and advise when needed.
Bronagh Neeson, who also manages Northern Ireland with me as an area manager, would absolutely be my work bestie. We have worked together for years. I trust her and have her back and I know she has mine. We are both extremely competitive and although we compete against each other we always congratulate each other on our successes.”
What advice has helped you throughout your career?
The best piece of advice I was given very early in my career was ‘be comfortable being uncomfortable’. Pushing myself outside of comfort zone by relocating to different countries, taking on new challenges, learning new skills and taking risks has paid off. Don’t be scared and worry about what happens if something doesn’t work – just think, what if does work out? How great would it be then?
