How the Enterprise BOSS Group drives career progression

Confidence and developing a personal brand are among the soft skills and competencies that help build career success.

These are some of the topics covered by Enterprise’s BOSS Group, a 12-month programme at the European campus targeted at more junior members of staff to drive their development. Sessions are led by employees from areas including IT, finance, marketing and sales.

Ben Harvey, Director of Business Intelligence Data and Analytics and BOSS Group Board Co-Chair said, “Everyone brings their own experience. We all remember being a nervous wreck giving our first presentation. We share personal insights and learnings, allowing BOSS members to practice new skills in a safe space.”

“We don’t talk about confidence enough. It’s easy to keep working without thinking about your goals, especially as a homeworker”

Senior Sports Business Development Representative, Jess Nichols joined the board of BOSS Group having attended as a trainee.

“I joined the board to help other Enterprise employees develop their confidence,” she said. “We don’t talk about confidence enough. It’s easy to keep working without thinking about your goals, especially as a homeworker.”

Jess joined Enterprise as a Management Trainee in 2014 and moved to a role in head office as an Events Team Coordinator. She was promoted to Account Manager in 2018.

Covid hit just two weeks after Jess came back from maternity leave.

“I had just come back from maternity leave, and I had a baby daughter and a new role. We were all homeworkers which gave me flexibility. Then the pandemic struck. I needed a confidence boost and to rethink my next step. HR suggested I join the BOSS Group training. It really helped!”

Jess is now an Account Manager in sports and events, providing mobility to global events such as cycling, Australian basketball, Formula 1 and golf.

“I love my job,” Jess enthused. “It’s the best move I ever made.”

“Personal brand was the one standout topic that made me consider myself as an individual”

The workshop on personal brand is one of the most popular sessions in the BOSS Group programme.

Account Development Representative, Samantha Harrington, (BOSS Group alumna) said, "Personal brand was the one standout topic that made me consider myself as an individual. It helped me think about how my colleagues and clients perceive me. We ask ourselves what we want to be known for and why, and how we can deliver our message clearly while maintaining individuality."

Key behaviours for building a personal brand:

  • Maintain a ‘brag folder’ to keep track of personal achievements
  • Find ways to talk about how your achievements are contributing to your team confidently and without bragging
  • Learn to acknowledge and value all achievements including your own
  • Be an advocate and endorse the achievements of your co-workers to help you build a strong network and find sponsors.

  • Pick three adjectives to describe you that relate to qualities that are valued in your current and next role.
  • Build relationships
  • Bring your authentic self to work
